Sustainable, nature-driven gardening!
Enhancing biodiversity and creating dynamic landscapes that are designed for wildlife and people, that help us re-kindle our relationship to the natural world.
It involves rewilding our land with plants that have evolved here for centuries and creating biodiverse landscapes that are full and bountiful for all.
In a Wildscape, we turn a patchwork of green spaces into a quilt of restored habitat. More diverse - plant driven landscapes mean more choices of food and shelter for pollinators, native birds and other wildlife.
Building Healthy Soils
Just below our feet, is a vibrant and exciting world filled with biodiversity. Home to one-quarter of all animals living on the planet, earth’s soil is habitat for countless species. 1 gram of soil is home to 4,000 to 10,000 different species of microorganisms, like bacteria and archaea. earthworms, ants and insects.
They help produce the healthy soils we need to grow our food which means they play a huge role in preserving human well-being and the overall health of our planet.
Ways we help care for soil in our gardens:
- cover, cover, cover!! With plants, organic matter & mulch
- ammending/feeding the soil with lots of compost and organic matter
- planting diverse gardens
- attracting beneficial critters!
- using native plants in our designs
Why grow native plants
Our native plants are important for supporting the needs of local wildlife populations. They provide and home and nectar for pollinators including hummingbirds, native bees, butterflies, moths, and bats and they provide protective shelter for local wildlife.
Using native plants in your garden is beneficial because:
These plants are the foundation of our natural communities.
Ontario’s native plants are vital to local ecosystems as they have evolved here over a very long period. They improve soil, air and water quality by removing toxins and pollution. They provide food & habitat for many species that are becoming increasingly rare in the wild. Using locally adapted native plants species instead of exotic species increases biodiversity. They eliminate the need for chemical inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers that cause harm to other life and contaminate the water. They stabilize soil, prevent erosion and are more efficient at filtering storm water.
They are beautiful!
